I have been painting for a long time, and always I have been threatening to go more abstract. Still, the lure of the image has usually captured me...the magic of seeing the scene appearing before my eyes and the seductive power of illusion. Well, I finally made the leap, and it is really tough. I started "painting" some small non representational pieces to break out of my usual comfort zone. When I put those quote marks, it is because I want the materiality of the medium to inform the structure of the painting, rather than the subject, so in a sense, I am not painting, rather, I am letting the paint create the form. My role in the partnership is to use my critical eye and create a composition out of the random effects of viscosity and gravity. So it is difficult to let go of control and allow the paint to be,well, paint. Still I am enjoying the process, it's like riding a wild horse. It bucks and twists and tries to throw me off, and once in a while it gallops across the savannah with the wind in its mane.
